FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
PAINT PROTECTION FILM
What is Paint Protection Film, and why do I need it?
PPF is a virtually invisible urethane film that protects your vehicle’s paint from rock chips, scratches, road salt, and other hazards. It is essential for keeping your car looking new and maintaining its resale value, especially in areas like the Midwest where road debris and harsh winters take a toll on paint. Llumar’s PPF provides industry leading durability and clarity.
How long does Llumar PPF last?
Llumar offers a 10-year limited warranty on its Platinum Series PPF. In real-world use, it can last well beyond that with proper care. It resists yellowing, cracking, and peeling better than most, thanks to advanced self-healing and hydrophobic properties.
Does Llumar PPF really self-heal scratches?
Yes! Llumar PPF features a self-healing topcoat that uses heat (from the sun or warm water) to eliminate fine scratches and swirl marks. It’s one of the most impressive benefits for daily drivers who want a flawless finish without constant polishing.
Can you see the film once it's installed?
Not unless you’re really looking for it. Llumar Platinum PPF is crystal-clear and designed to blend in seamlessly with your paint. For those looking to change the finish, the Llumar Matte PPF can turn gloss paint into a satin look while offering the same protection.
Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
Ceramic coatings and PPF serve different purposes. Ceramic adds shine and makes cleaning easier, but it doesn’t protect against rock chips or scratches. PPF, on the other hand, is a physical barrier that guards against impact damage. Our Llumar film includes a hydrophobic topcoat for easy cleaning, but many customers choose to apply a ceramic coating on top of the PPF for enhanced gloss, slickness, and even easier maintenance.
What parts of my car should I protect with PPF?
At a minimum, we recommend our Platinum Package, which includes the front bumper, leading edge of the hood, front portions of the fenders, side mirrors, and door edges. For added protection, you can upgrade to cover high impact areas like rockers, door cups, and trunk ledges, or even opt for full body coverage. Many customers choose our Titanium Package, which provides full front end protection, including the entire hood and fenders. This eliminates visible film edges where dirt can collect, offering a cleaner and more seamless finish.
How long does installation take?
It depends on the coverage. A full front end usually takes 1 to 2 days, while a full-body wrap can take 3 to 5 days. We always allow time for precise installation and curing — we don’t rush the process, especially on high-end vehicles.
Can I wash my car after PPF is installed?
You’ll want to wait about 3 to 5 days after installation before washing. After that, you can wash as usual, but we always recommend touchless or hand washing to preserve the film’s finish. Llumar’s hydrophobic top layer makes cleaning easier and reduces water spots.
Will PPF damage my paint if removed?
Not if it is removed properly. Llumar PPF is safe for factory paint and actually protects it over time. When removed correctly, usually with gentle heat, it comes off clean and leaves your original paint in excellent condition.
Is Llumar worth the cost compared to other films?
Absolutely. We’ve used and tested other films, but Llumar consistently offers the best combination of clarity, durability, self-healing, and warranty support. It’s proudly made in the USA, with top-tier quality control and an installer network that’s second to none. That’s why it’s our go-to film for customers who want true protection without compromise.
How long does the curing process take for Paint Protection Film (PPF)?
The curing process for Paint Protection Film can take up to 30 days, depending on weather and climate conditions. Warmer, sunnier environments may speed up curing, while cooler or more humid conditions may extend the process. During this time, it is normal to notice small bubbles, moisture pockets, or slight hazing under the film. These are part of the natural curing process and will typically clear up as the film settles and adheres completely.
RUST PROOFING & UNDERCOATING
Do I really need rustproofing if my car is new?
Absolutely. Just because your vehicle is new does not mean it is protected. Most manufacturers do not include complete undercarriage or inner panel protection. At P&L, we apply professional grade ECP and Auto Armor protection that stops rust before it starts, which is especially important in Minnesota where road salt is brutal on vehicles.
What’s the difference between rustproofing and undercoating?
Rustproofing targets inner body panels, such as doors, rocker panels, and inside seams, to prevent corrosion from moisture and salt.
Undercoating protects the exposed underside of your vehicle, such as the frame, suspension, and wheel wells, from road debris, salt, and moisture.
At P&L Automotive, we typically recommend both for full body protection.
How long does rustproofing and undercoating last?
When applied professionally, our rustproofing packages can provide protection for over a decade. Both Auto Armor and ECP offer limited lifetime warranties for added peace of mind. Warranty coverage varies based on your vehicle’s model year and the specific package selected.
Will rustproofing and undercoating void my factory warranty?
Not at all. Our products are warranty-safe and dealership-friendly. In fact, many dealers trust us to protect their inventory. We use professional-grade materials and proper application methods that comply with manufacturer guidelines.
Is it too late to apply rustproofing if my car already has some rust?
Not necessarily. While rustproofing works best on clean surfaces, we can still slow down or stop the progression of light surface rust. We’ll inspect your vehicle first. If the rust is too advanced, we’ll be honest and let you know your options.
Can I wash my car after rustproofing or undercoating?
We recommend avoiding high-pressure car washes for at least 5 days after your vehicle has been rustproofed or undercoated. This curing period ensures the coating bonds properly for maximum long-term protection.
Does undercoating reduce road noise?
It does! Our undercoating creates a protective layer that also acts as a sound barrier, helping reduce road vibration and noise, especially on gravel or uneven roads.
How long does the application process take?
Most rustproofing and undercoating jobs take one business day. We’ll let you know upfront if it’s a more involved process based on your vehicle or if you’re combining with other protection services.
Can I drive in snow or rain after rustproofing and undercoating?
Yes, your vehicle is safe to drive in snow, rain, or wet conditions immediately after rustproofing or undercoating is applied. Normal driving will not affect the treatment. The only restriction is avoiding high-pressure car washes for the first 5 days to allow the coating to fully cure and bond.
Does rustproofing protect against the liquid brine Minnesota sprays on the roads?
Yes, and it is more important than ever. Minnesota uses liquid salt brine, a mixture of sodium chloride and water, as a pre treatment to keep roads from icing up. While effective for safety, this solution is significantly more corrosive than traditional rock salt. Studies show it can be up to seven times more aggressive when it comes to accelerating rust.
Our rustproofing and undercoating services are specifically designed to shield vulnerable areas from these harsh chemicals. When professionally applied, our ECP and Auto Armor products create a barrier that helps prevent brine from seeping into seams, crevices, and metal components, where corrosion often starts.
If you drive in Minnesota winters, this protection is not optional. It is essential.
Why should I trust P&L Automotive for rust protection?
We have been doing this for over 40 years and work with only top tier products like ECP and Auto Armor. Our technicians are experienced, our process is thorough, and we back everything with real warranty support, not just a sales pitch. When you choose P&L, you are getting protection that lasts, installed by people who care. Twin Cities dealerships trust us to protect their customers’ vehicles, and so can you.
PAINT SEALANT
What’s the difference between other paint sealants and Diamond Ceramic Paint Sealant?
Most paint sealants are synthetic wax alternatives that create a slick, protective barrier lasting a few months. Our Diamond Ceramic Paint Sealant chemically bonds to your paint and provides longer lasting, more durable protection for up to several years. Our Diamond Ceramic with Graphene takes it a step further with advanced hydrophobic properties, UV defense, and enhanced gloss.
How long does Diamond Ceramic Paint Sealant last?
With proper care, Diamond Ceramic Paint Sealant can last up to 5 years, and Diamond Ceramic with Graphene can extend durability and protection even longer. These aren’t glorified waxes. They’re engineered coatings built to last.
Does Diamond Ceramic Paint Sealant make my car scratch-proof?
Not exactly. Our Diamond Ceramic Paint Sealant adds a durable layer of protection, but they won’t prevent deep scratches or rock chips like Paint Protection Film (PPF). That said, they do help resist minor surface swirls and and keep your paint looking new for longer.
Is Diamond Ceramic with Graphene better than your standard Diamond Ceramic Paint Sealant?
Yes, it adds an extra layer of strength and slickness. Graphene helps reduce water spotting and enhances heat resistance, making it a great option for darker-colored vehicles and cars exposed to harsh elements or daily driving.
Can I still wash my car after Diamond Ceramic Paint Sealant?
Absolutely, and it’ll be easier than ever. Dirt and contaminants slide off much more easily. Just skip the drive-thru washes with harsh brushes and use pH-neutral soap and soft mitts to keep that shine locked in.
Is there a warranty with your Diamond Ceramic Paint Sealant?
Yes. Both ECP and Auto Armor products are backed by an industry leading warranty when applied by a certified installer like P&L Automotive. Warranty terms vary based on your vehicle’s age and coverage selected, but you’ll get real support, not just a sales pitch.
Do I need to reapply the coating every year?
Nope. These aren’t temporary waxes. With Diamond Ceramic, you’re getting long-term protection. We do recommend annual inspections or maintenance boosts if you want to maximize lifespan, but reapplication isn’t necessary unless you opt for a short-term sealant.
Can I apply ceramic coating myself?
You could, but we wouldn’t recommend it. Professional-grade paint sealants like Diamond Ceramic require proper surface prep and curing. If applied incorrectly, you can end up with streaks, high spots, or even damage. Leave it to trained technicians for the best results. We’ve been doing it for decades.
Will Diamond Ceramic Paint Sealant protect against Minnesota winters and salt?
Yes, it adds a strong barrier against road salt, grime, and the freeze/thaw abuse we see here. It’s a great addition to undercoating or rustproofing, because it helps preserve your vehicle’s exterior finish and resale value all year round.
Why should I trust P&L Automotive with my paint protection?
We’ve spent over 40 years perfecting our craft. We use only top-tier brands like ECP and Auto Armor, and our experienced technicians do things the right way. No shortcuts. That’s why dealerships across the Twin Cities trust us to protect their customers’ vehicles… and you can too.
INTERIOR PROTECTION
What exactly does an interior protection coating do?
Our interior protection coatings create an invisible barrier on fabric, carpet, vinyl, and leather surfaces. They help repel spills, block stains, reduce fading, and make cleaning much easier, whether it’s coffee, ketchup, sunscreen, or mud from Minnesota winters.
Is it safe for kids and pets?
Yes. ECP and Auto Armor interior products are water-based, non-toxic once cured, and safe for families with children and pets. They’re designed for daily use vehicles and tested for real-world messes.
What areas of the interior does it cover?
We protect the full interior, seats (cloth or leather), carpet, mats, and even the door panels and dashboard. Leather and vinyl surfaces get a conditioner-protectant, while fabrics get a stain-blocking treatment.
Does it make the seats feel slippery or look different?
Not at all. The treatment is completely invisible. You won’t notice it’s there, until that first spill beads up and wipes right off.
Can it really stop stains from setting in?
Absolutely. While nothing makes your interior bulletproof, these coatings dramatically reduce how quickly stains set in and give you time to clean them up before they become permanent. Many customers are shocked how well it works after their first big spill.
How long does interior protection last?
When professionally applied, interior protection can last several years. With ECP and Auto Armor, the treatment is backed by a limited lifetime warranty for qualifying vehicles. That means long-term peace of mind.
What if something still stains or damages the interior?
That’s where the warranty comes in. If a covered stain can’t be removed, the warranty may reimburse for professional cleaning or even replacement of the damaged area. We help file the claim, no hassle.
Will it help with UV damage or fading?
Yes. The leather and vinyl conditioners we use include UV inhibitors that help prevent fading and cracking over time, especially on dashboards and seats exposed to sunlight.
Is this only for new cars?
Not at all. While it’s best to apply interior protection to a clean or newer vehicle, we can apply it to used vehicles after a proper interior detail. If your ride still looks good, we can help keep it that way.
Why get this from P&L instead of doing it myself?
Because we use professional-grade products from ECP and Auto Armor, not watered-down retail sprays. Our trained techs apply it properly for even coverage, and our service comes backed by real warranty support. Plus, Twin Cities dealerships trust us to protect their customers’ vehicles, so can you. We’ve been doing this for over 40 years, and we stand behind our work.
WINDOW TINT
What’s the difference between ATC, CTX, and IRX film?
ATC: A dyed film that provides a sleek look and excellent glare reduction at an affordable price.
CTX: A nano-ceramic film that blocks more heat and doesn’t interfere with electronics, perfect for comfort and connectivity.
IRX: Our top-tier infrared-rejecting ceramic film, designed for ultimate heat and UV rejection. If you want the highest performance, this is the one.
What tint darkness levels do you offer?
We offer four levels of darkness:
50%, 35%, 20%, and 5% (also known as “limo tint”).
Not sure which is right for you? 50% gives a subtle look with good heat rejection, while 5% is ultra-dark for maximum privacy. We’ll help you choose the perfect shade based on your goals and local laws.
Is window tinting legal in Minnesota?
Yes, but there are specific limits. Front side windows must allow at least 50% of light through. The darkest limit on rear windows of coupes and sedans is also 50%. All other vehicle types are not limited on the rear windows.
We’ll make sure your tint is compliant while still giving you the look and performance you want.
Will tinting my windows help with heat and glare?
Absolutely. All of our Llumar films reduce glare and offer UV protection. CTX and IRX go even further by rejecting a significant amount of solar and infrared heat, making your cabin cooler and more comfortable year-round.
What are the benefits of Llumar window tint film over factory tinted glass?
Llumar window film delivers several advantages that factory tinted glass can’t match. OEM tint is simply dyed glass with limited functional protection, while Llumar’s advanced technology provides meaningful heat rejection and blocks 99 percent of harmful UVA and UVB rays to help protect passengers and interior materials. Llumar also adds a scratch resistant hardcoat and a layer of shatter resistance for enhanced safety and durability, benefits OEM tint does not offer. It can be installed on clear factory windows for a more uniform look, and Llumar’s AIR clear film can be applied over OEM privacy glass to add UV and heat protection without darkening the windows. All Llumar films come with a lifetime warranty against fading, bubbling, and peeling, offering long term performance and peace of mind that factory tint alone cannot provide.
Will tint affect my visibility at night?
That depends on the darkness level you choose. Lighter shades like 35 percent or 50 percent allow more visibility while still reducing glare and heat. Here is something most people don’t realize: our high quality Llumar film actually allows you to see out better than lower quality tints of the same darkness. Think of it like a premium pair of sunglasses. You still get the shade, but with sharper clarity and better visibility.
We can show you tint samples so you can see the difference for yourself before making a decision.
Does window tint block UV rays?
Yes. All Llumar window films block over 99% of harmful UV rays, helping protect your skin and reduce fading to your interior over time. It’s like SPF 285 for your vehicle.
Will window tint interfere with my phone, GPS, or radio?
Not with our ceramic films. CTX and IRX are signal-friendly, so your electronics and connectivity won’t be affected.
How long does tint installation take?
Most vehicles are completed in a few hours or less. We take the time to do it right, using precision-cut film and clean-room techniques to ensure a flawless finish.
Is there a warranty?
Yes. Llumar stands behind their films with a limited lifetime warranty against bubbling, peeling, fading, or discoloration when installed by an authorized dealer like us. If any issues arise, just reach out and we’ll help you get it resolved quickly and hassle-free.
Why choose P&L Automotive for window tint?
We’ve been protecting vehicles for over 40 years and partner only with top-tier brands like Llumar. Our team installs film with skill and care, and Twin Cities dealerships trust us to tint thousands of vehicles each year. You’ll get premium results backed by real warranty support, not just a sales pitch.
ELECTRONIC RUST PROTECTION
Does electromagnetic rust protection actually work?
Yes, it does, but only when installed correctly. Final Coat modules use a proven electromagnetic pulse to slow down the corrosion process on both the inside and outside of your vehicle’s metal panels. While no solution can stop rust completely, this system significantly reduces it, especially in high salt areas like Minnesota.
How is this different from traditional rustproofing?
Our traditional rustproof coating forms a physical barrier. Electromagnetic protection is different. It is a maintenance free electronic device that sends a pulse through your vehicle’s metal to reduce oxidation. Many of our customers choose both for the best long term protection.
Is it safe for my vehicle’s electronics?
Absolutely. Final Coat® modules are engineered to work with today’s complex vehicle electronics and are fully tested for safety and compatibility. We’ve installed these on everything from electric vehicles to snow plow/salt trucks without issue.
Will it void my warranty?
No. When installed professionally, Final Coat’s system is fully warranty-safe. Plus, the module itself includes a transferable warranty for added peace of mind.
How long does it last?
Once installed, the Final Coat® module provides year-round protection without any reapplication or maintenance. It’s a one-time installation that works silently in the background for the life of your vehicle. This device is also transferable. It can be professionally removed and reinstalled on your future vehicles.
Does it protect the entire vehicle?
Yes, the pulse is designed to cover all grounded metal surfaces of your vehicle, including the frame, panels, and undercarriage. Combining it with undercoating adds an extra layer of defense for areas like wheel wells and suspension components.
How does the Final Coat® module compare to other electronic rust protection devices?
Not all electronic rust modules are created equal. Some use outdated cathodic methods or low powered systems that simply are not effective on today’s vehicles. Final Coat stands out because it uses a capacitive coupling design, generating a pulsed electromagnetic field that helps slow down corrosion across your vehicle’s entire metal body.
Is it effective in Minnesota winters?
This is where Final Coat® shines. Snow, salt, moisture, and fluctuating temps are brutal on vehicles. The electromagnetic pulse helps disrupt the conditions that accelerate rust, making it an ideal solution for Twin Cities drivers.
Can I install it myself?
We don’t recommend it. To ensure full coverage and proper ground connection, this system should be installed by a trained technician. That is where our team at P&L Automotive comes in. We do it right the first time.
Does Electronic Rust Protection help against the liquid brine Minnesota sprays on the roads?
Yes, it does. Minnesota’s use of liquid salt brine, a pre treatment solution made from sodium chloride and water, is highly corrosive and can be up to seven times more aggressive than traditional road salt. This brine seeps into tight seams and hard to reach areas where rust starts forming from the inside out.
Our Final Coat Electronic Rust Protection module helps fight this by sending a controlled current through your vehicle’s metal panels, which slows down the electrochemical process that causes rust. It is especially useful for protecting inner body panels and areas traditional sprays cannot reach.
Why should I choose P&L for this?
We have been protecting vehicles for over 40 years and have rigorously tested leading brands and commercial grade products to ensure we offer only top tier solutions, saving you the guesswork. Dealerships across the region trust us to protect their inventory, and you can too.
